LUCKLESS
I’ll catch a little snowflake,
And bundle it up with a pocket full of joy
Aim it at the sky and punch it with an élan
Borne out of years of practice
Honed to perfection.
I’ll say, “I don’t need you to live my life.”
“Luck” - they call you, “I don’t need you.”
So here’s my gift to you,
A sassy snowflake aimed straight for your lucky nose
Blessed may you be, for ‘tis a poor thing
That you offer; an excuse for the poor
A habit of the weak, a tool for the small spirited
I am neither, I crave no such trifles
For I walk alone, with a spine of steel
A step in front every step, day by day
Time after time, I walk slowly
And alone, with all that I can summon
All my hard work, my mind and my will
I forge ahead, through storms and swamps
For I need no luck, while I am strong enough
I need you not, luck – to guide me
I need you not – you wanderer
Be gone, I need you not
My will alone is enough.
